Biblical Claims to Messiahship
The fulfillment of prophecies about himself miraculously confirmed Jesus’ claim to be the Messiah
Woman, (Human Race) He would come as a member of humanity, the seed of woman. “And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed; and I shall bruise you head, and you shall bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)
Line of Seth (a particular lineage) And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. (Genesis 4:25)
Descendent of Shem (again a particular lineage) “And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.” (Genesis 9:26)
Abraham (Ethnic Group) He would come as a member of Israel, a child of Abraham. “And I will bless them that bless you, and curse him that curses you: and in you shall all families of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3)
Judah (Tribe) He would belong to the tribe of Judah. “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his fee, until Shiloh come: and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.” (Genesis 49:10)
David, (Dynasty) He will be of the family of David. “And when your days be fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers. I will set up your seed after you which shall proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom (2 Sam 7:12) and “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King, who will reign wisely and do what is just an right in the land…. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteousness (Jer. 23:5-6)
Son of a Virgin (miraculous conception) “So, the Lord Himself shall give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bring out a son, and ty shall call his name Immanuel.” (Is 7:14)
Bethlehem (Where) He would be born in Bethlehem. “And you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, you being least among the thousands of Judah, out of you he shall come forth to Me, to become Ruler in Israel, He whose goings forth have been from the old, from the days of eternity.” (Micah 5:2)
33 AD (When) He would die in 33AD. “Seventy sevens are divided as to your people and as to your holy city, to finish the transgression and to make and end of sins, and to make atonement for iniquity and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going out of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem (444 BC) to Messiah the prince (AD 33) shall be seven sevens and sixty two sevens. (69 x7) Dan 9:24-25. Note this is 483 Jewish lunar years of 360 days each. Add to this six more years for the five extra days for 483 years, and it makes exactly 483 (477+ 6) from 444 BC to 33 AD.
Heralded by forerunner. “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” (Isaiah 40:3)
He would be proclaimed as a king. “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold your king is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zech 9:9)
He would suffer and die for our sins. “But he was wounded or our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and by his stripes we are healed. The Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all… He was led as a lamb to the slaughter.. For the transgression of my people He was stricken. And He made his grave with the wicked but with the rich at his death… yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief.. He bore the sins of many and made intercession for the transgressors. “(Is 53:5-12)
His Side would be pierced. “They will look on me whom thy have pierced; they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.” (Zec 12:10)
He would rise from the dead. “For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the path of life” (Ps. 16:10) and “When you make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong his days” (Is. 53:10), and “the rulers take counsel against His Anointed… Yet I have set My King on my holy hill of Zion.. The Lord said to Me, You are My son, Today I have begotten You (from the dead) (Ps 2:2, 6-7)
The sign of true prophecies is that they come to pass. The prophet Isaiah noted that God has chosen to use prophecies. “Even from the beginning I have declared it to you; before it came to pass, I proclaimed it to you, lest you should say, My idol had done them” (Is 48.5) and “Besides Me there is no God. And who can proclaim as I do.. the things that are coming and shall come?” (Is 44:6-7) Jesus himself said, “Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. (John 13:19)
God has given us a way to evaluate the truthfulness of his message. He has proclaimed beforehand what will happen. Who else but God can do this accurately? God warns against listening to false prophets. The sign of a false prophecy is that it does not come to pass. “If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord but the thing does not take place or prove true, it is a word that the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; do not be frightened by it. (Deuteronomy 22:18) The fulfillment of prophecy is a strong argument for the messiahship of Jesus.
Jesus must be God:
- OT predicted the Messiah would be God (Psa. 2:7, 45:6, 110:1, Isa. 7:14, Isa 9:6, Zech 12:10)
- Jesus was the Messiah (Jn 4:25; Mk 14:61)
To manifest Deity Jesus must be God:
- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
- The Word was God and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
- He who has seen Me has seen the Father (John 14:9)
- God was manifest in the flesh (1 Tim 3:16)
To Redeem Humanity Jesus must be God:
- Jesus is the Mediator between God and Man “For there is on God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim 2:5)
- Jesus is the Reconciler of Man to God “God was in Christ reconciling the word unto Himself (2 Cor. 5:19)
Therefore, Jesus must be both God and Man to be mediator and reconciler. Because only the God-man can bridge between God and Man.
