Jesus Performed Miracles
Number of Miracles
There are over 60 miracles in Gospels. Many were multiple healings. “Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness.” (Mt. 9:35). According to Jewish law only two or three witnesses needed. “But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.” (Mt 18:16)
Nature of Miracles
- All were immediate events
- They were connected with a truth claim in the name of God
- Many include incurable diseases
- Some involved a predictive element
- Many involved no faith by the recipient (not psychosomatic)
The Purpose of the Miracles
Nicodemus said, “We know you are a teacher that came from God. For No man can do the miracles you do unless God is with him” (Jn 3:2)
Peter said, “Jesus was a man attested to you by God with many mighty works and wonders and signs. (Act 2:22)
The author of Hebrews said “how can we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? It was declared at first through the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, 4 while God added his testimony by signs and wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, distributed according to his will.” (Heb 2:3-4)
