What is Truth
Certainly, most of us have been perplexed by the rapid changes in our society. Things which we have taken for granted are no longer seen as true. For instance, look at this comparison of “old” truth to “new” truth. How does that even make sense?
Old Truth | New Truth |
Men and Women are determined by their chromosomes and are fixed genders | A Man can be a woman, a woman can be a man |
Moral values are absolute | People get to decide their own morals |
Marriage is between a man and woman | Marriage is between two or more people who love one another. |
God exists | God, as previously known, is dead. |
I, or perhaps we, have understood, based on Scripture that truth could be known. The Bible takes the view that truth aligns with reality. Truth reflects the real condition of that which is being described. Yet it seems people reject the truth.
In the Gospel of John, while speaking to Pilate Jesus tells us that he came into the world to testify to the truth. He then said “Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Jesus knew that there was truth and he came specifically to proclaim that truth.
There is no longer any guarantee that people will come to a conversation with the same understanding of truth that I hold. To help understand why it is sometimes difficult to communicate the truth we will examine five unhelpful ways that people understand the truth and then we will look at what truth is.
